Seattle Gaels

About Seattle's Womens Football Club

Gaelic football is one of four Gaelic Games run by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), the largest and most popular organization in Ireland. The players are all amateurs, and so are playing for "the glory of the parish pump".The pinnacle of the sport is the inter county All-Ireland Football Final. The game is believed to have descended from ancient Irish football known as caid which date back to 1537, although the modern game took shape in 1887.

This national sport which is firmly rooted in the history, legend and myth of Ireland has been gaining great momentum recently in the United States. The North American County Board promotes and regulates Gaelic Games in an area stretching thousands of miles from Boston in the US Northeast, to Seattle in the US Northwest, to San Diego in the US Southwest, to Miami in the US Southeast. The Board reports to the GAA’s Central Council in Dublin, Ireland and is responsible for the promotion of Gaelic Games in North America.

In 1997 the first ladies gaelic football team from Seattle participated in the North America Gaelic Football Championships and since then Seattle Gaels Women's Gaelic Football Team continues to participate in the Championships each year. In addition the Gaels host and compete in various Northwest tournaments, including games against Vancouver and San Francisco. Our gaelic football season lasts from the beginning of May until September.

For the 2007 season we are eager to defend our three-time reign as winner of the annual Canadian championships as well as improve on our second place finish at the National Championships in Chicago over Labor Day weekend. Practice will start at the beginning of May, every Tuesday and Thursday. In the meantime, we are planning to have a few casual kick-arounds and some fun social events over the off-season, please contact Kate Starbird for more information. Absolutely no experience is necessary. You don’t even have to know what gaelic football is. All that we ask for is a good attitude and a willingness to learn.
